MegaPromts: A Method for Creating High Quality ChatGPT Outputs

You may have heard the term ‘megaprompt’ start to pop up around the corners of the AI internet. While it sounds flashy, it’s really just a very detailed robust prompt where you provide specific context, details of the output you need, format, tone, and any other variables that will help guide the chatbot.

There’s no perfect formula for this, so you will have to iterate to make it better. The beauty of ChatGPT is that there’s no limit to how many times you can iterate. Remember, ‘garbage in, garbage out’.

There are 7 main criteria you must consider when drafting a megaprompt.

Context: Tell ChatGPT who it is

Example: You are a copywriting AI, a professional that helps clients create catchy ad copy to drive better results. You are an expert at crafting short but punchy phrasing as well as an expert in their business.

Goal: What you hope to achieve

Example: Write 5 variations of ad copy based on the information about me and our business.

Structure: The outline of the output

Example:

  • Write 5 unique headlines and 5 unique descriptions
  • Headlines must be less than 30 characters, and descriptions must be less than 90 characters.
  • Headlines should callout things that relate to the business.
  • Descriptions should expound on what the headlines callout.
  • Finish the descriptions with a CTA (what is the next step for them)

Criteria: Requirements

Example: Ad copy is concise, easy to scan, and straightforward

Information About Me: Inputs & Variables

Example:

  • My target audience: Their role, their company and business model
  • Problem: what are some problems we can solve
  • My Business: Our value prop
  • My desired CTA: Download a report, purchase a product, etc
  • Tone of Voice: confident, professional

Templates: Instruction on style

Example: Provide me 2 versions of the ad copy with different styles:

  • Creative
  • Concise

Response Formatting: Preferred output format

Example: Use Markdown to format your response.

I decided to test this prompt with the following business information:

  • My target audience: Women aged 30-50, healthy, active, living a fast paced life, interested in health/wellness, yoga, healthy living
  • Problem: Eating too much, lacking vitamins and minerals, need a snack on the go
  • My Business: we make natural, good for you dried fruit snacks and fruit juices
  • My desired CTA: shop now
  • Tone of Voice: confident, professional

This was my first result:

The concise style is rather bland, but the creative style has some great initial ideas. You can always iterate on these results, or you can take them as inspiration for you or your team to write the ad copy. No matter what you choose, this is a great starting point.

If you do use this method, please share your results. And if you think of a better way to phrase it, I would love to know. We’re only on the tip of the iceberg with what we can do with AI and LLMs, so don’t be afraid to test new ideas!
